GT Packages

The GT option was the first performance package available for Cougars.  It could be ordered on 1967-1969 and 1971-1972 Cats, but the actual equipment included in the package varied from year to year and, by 1969, the package no longer included a specific engine.  The following lists indicate the major items included in the GT option package by model year.

1968 Standard Coupe with GT option

1967 GT Equipment Package:

  • 320 h.p. 390-4V (S code) engine
  • Low resriction dual exhaust
  • Power Booster fan
  • Power front disc brakes
  • Wide-Oval nylon F70-14 white sidewall tires
  • Special wheels with 6" rims
  • Performance handling package
  • GT badge on front fenders

1968 GT Equipment Package:

  • 325 h.p. 390-4V (S code) engine
  • Bright engine trim
  • Low restriction dual exhaust
  • Power front disc brakes
  • Wide-Oval nylon F70-14 white sidewall tires
  • Performance handling package
  • GT badge on front fenders

1969 GT Equipment Package:

  • Low restriction dual exhaust
  • E70 X 14 fiberglass-belted tires
  • Competition handling package
  • Power dome hood stripes (black or silver) with "351" and Cougar head graphic

1971-1972 GT Equipment Packages:

As marketing emphasis shifted from performance to luxury, GT equipment packages became less significant in terms of the equipment they included.  Typical components in 1971 and 1972 included:

  • High-ratio axle
  • Heavy-duty suspension
  • Racing mirrors
  • Simulated hood scoop
  • Performance cooling package
  • Performance guages
  • Special wheel covers
  • F78-14 whitewall tires
  • ID badges
